How to Interpret Number of Stocks Up | Down 4% (aka 4Pct Sentiment)?

4Pct Sentiment reflects the directional flow of money into or out of the market. We pay close attention to extreme values, as they often indicate institutional buying or selling activity.

While each reading captures only a single day, patterns become more meaningful when extreme values occur over multiple sessions—especially when combined with T2108, a medium-term market breadth indicator that measures the percentage of stocks trading above their 50-day SMA. Together, they offer a clearer view of the market’s underlying momentum.

The 4Pct EOD Sentiment Projection allows us to anticipate these signals in real time, without waiting for the market to close. By leveraging intraday volume projections, it estimates end-of-day sentiment and provides early insight into institutional activity. It’s a valuable tool for assessing swing risk size during active trading hours.

Depending on the number of extreme price moves, sentiment is classified as follows:

  • Extreme Bullish: If 4Pct Up is above 1000.
  • Extreme Bearish: If 4Pct Down is above 1000.
  • Very Bullish: If 4Pct Up is above 300.
  • Very Bearish: If 4Pct Down is above 300.
  • Bullish: If the difference between 4Pct Up and 4Pct Down is above 20.
  • Bearish: If the difference between 4Pct Down and 4Pct Up is above 20.
  • Neutral: Otherwise.
